The NeuroChaos Brain Health Test is a 10-minute, non-invasive advanced ultrasound examination focused on assessing the regulation of brain blood flow, which is often impaired following head injury. Sports medicine, emergency room, neurological, and military physicians utilize the completely objective test results as they guide patient recovery plans and make decisions on clearing the patient to return to school, work, service or athletic activities.

 

The brain is a critical organ, and stringent control of cerebral blood flow is pivotal for normal brain function. The aim of cerebrovascular regulation is to keep the blood flow adequate and in a constant state. Following head trauma, the ability to properly regulate the cerebral blood flow may be compromised, leading to deleterious effects.

 

The NeuroChaos Brain Health Test assesses cerebrovascular regulation through quantitative evaluation of the variability of the velocity of the cerebral blood flow. Because the brain is constantly receiving input and regulation is an intrinsic property of the system, no external stimuli such as breath holding, pressure or pharmacological agents is necessary for the test. The Neurovascular Complexity Index (NCI) is calculated by measuring the cerebral blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery over a period of time and measuring the changes. Assessment of the ability to regulate blood flow is critical to understanding the effect of injury, and is helpful to the clinician in their post-injury management of the patient.
